A 4-3-3 for FM27
A 4-3-3 puts four players in the defensive line, three in midfield and three in attack. In Football Manager the attacking three are often a wide forward on each side and a central striker. The midfield three can be two central midfielders and a holder, or a flat line. The defensive line is two full-backs and two centre-backs, with a goalkeeper behind them. That is the geometry. It is not a promise of goals.
FM Scout's FM27 tactics index includes an entry called 4-3-3 Dominator. The plug itself, the team instructions and the role duties live on that page. I am not reproducing the download. If you import it during the preview, remember tactical effectiveness: the official training dive says the squad needs time on the shape. A file does not skip training.
Mentality is the other half. An attacking mentality asks the line to step up and the forwards to take risks. A cautious one asks them to keep the rest defence. The starting plan below keeps an extra player behind the ball and describes when to adjust width or forward movement.
Against a back five, a 4-3-3's wide players have to decide whether they attack the full-back or come inside. That choice is a role duty in the tactic creator — attack, support or defend — and it is exactly the sort of detail I will quote only after the author's page is the source for the specific duty. Until you open that page, use your club's existing 4-3-3 and change one duty at a time.
A usable 4-3-3 starting plan
| Unit | Starting responsibility | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | A simple passing option behind the centre-backs | Distribution and composure; avoid asking for risky passes without support |
| Two centre-backs | Hold the defensive line; one can start short passing moves | Positioning, aerial cover and recovery pace |
| Full-backs | Advance one side at a time; the opposite side stays available behind the ball | Stamina, decisions and recovery speed |
| Holding midfielder | Screen the centre and remain behind the two central midfielders | Positioning, anticipation and secure passing |
| Two central midfielders | One supports build-up; the other joins attacks when space opens | A balance of passing, work rate and movement |
| Wide attackers | One maintains width; the other can move inside when the full-back overlaps | Dribbling and chance creation, with room to receive |
| Central forward | Occupy centre-backs and connect with the nearest wide attacker | Movement, finishing and the ability to retain or link possession |
Instructions and adjustments
- Start with a balanced approach, normal passing risk and an organised defensive shape. These are editorial choices rather than a promise of the strongest preset.
- Create width on at least one side. When a wide attacker moves inside, let that side’s full-back provide the outside option; avoid sending both full-backs forward together at first.
- Keep the holding midfielder central. If counterattacks repeatedly reach the space in front of your centre-backs, reduce one midfielder or full-back’s forward movement before raising the defensive line.
- Against a deep defence, adjust one source of width or one midfield runner. Against a stronger pressing side, keep an extra short passing option and reduce risky build-up requests.
- Review whether chances come from the intended side and whether the central screen remains in place. Change one responsibility at a time so the effect remains understandable.
Training priorities for the first week
| Phase | Priority | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Early week | Team familiarity and cohesion | Teach the same attacking and defensive shape |
| Middle of week | One chosen tactical focus: pressing or a low block | The official training deep dive describes team sessions aimed at these plans |
| Before the match | Preparation and condition management | Avoid adding a new shape immediately before a match |
| After the match | Recovery and a review of one recurring problem | Keep tactical work proportionate to the fixture schedule |
Is there an official FM27 4-3-3?
No. Sports Interactive does not publish a best shape. Dominator is a community plug on FM Scout.
Will it work on day one?
The training model says effectiveness comes after the squad practises the shape.
Can I use it with Chelsea?
Only if the roles fit the players you actually have. See the Chelsea page for squad context, not a plug.
